Stephen Hill has been producing fine Concert and Flamenco guitars since 1985, following a short apprenticeship as a cabinet maker. Early on Stephen studied guitar with Paco Pena, Juan Serrano, El Carbonaro and others in Spain after building his first flamenco guitar in 1988. During this time he spent many hours in the workshops of Manuel Reyes (Cordoba), Antonio Marin Montero (Granada) and other legends of the guitar making world.
Following closely the Spanish tradition, Stephen acquired the skills of his craft through hard work and isolation, travel and contemplation, and the a gradual refining of his sound and style over many years. From 1998, Stephen began to spend more and more time in Spain while running a thriving workshop in Lewes, England. But in 2004, he permanently moved to La Herradura by the coast in Granada province, Andalucia, the home of legendary Andres Segovia. La Herradura is also home of the Andres Segovia International Guitar Competition.
Stephen Hill offers the traditional fan strutted Master ‘Granada’ Model using European Spruce or Canadian Cedar and rosewood, and the Master ‘Lattice’ braced Concert Model (Cedar and rosewood) Both models give beauty, power and projection with the Lattice model giving slightly more volume and a quicker attack in the treble but with powerful bottom end.
He uses the best timbers, selected for their acoustic and visual qualities. He uses Indian, Ziricote, Madagascan , Amazon and other hard rosewoods, as well as sustainably produced (FSC) cedar (cedrela odorata) for necks and African Ebony fingerboards.
Stephen traditionally french polishes the guitars to perfection by hand, using pumice, shellac and alcohol.

Stephen Hill 1a Guitars are hand built by Stephen alone. They carry the full personality conceived by his hands, and are the outcome of 34 years of painstaking experience. The guitars are dated, signed, numbered and often have names given to them as each guitar is an individual creation.
