Homengae A Anibal Troilo

by Maximo Diego Pujol

Maximo Diego Pujol's Homenaje a Aníbal Troilo is a tango and milonga pair commissioned by Keith Calmes, and was completed on March 1, 2011. Anibal Troilo was one of the most important bandoneon players, composers and conductors in the golden age of tango history (the 1940's and 1950's). Troilo's orchestra was the best in the history of the genre; and he wrote several very popular pieces such as La ultima curda, Che bandoneon,Maria, Responso, La Trampera, and Sur (which is perhaps his most popular song). Astor Piazzolla was the 2nd bandoneon in Troilo's orchestra when he was just 18 years old. It was his first job (which lasted for many years) and Troilo was Piazzolla's close friend and mentor. Piazzolla also was the arranger of that orchestra for many years. Troilo died in 1976 and everybody remembers him with love and remembers his orchestra as the best in tango history. Troilo frequently wrote tangos about the last... something (for example: La ultima curda, La ultima grela, etc.. Troilo always said that something will be the last one, and so it is very sad and melancholic. That's why I wrote El Ultimo Telon (The Final Curtain), because after his death there was never another concert played by Anibal Troilo. This tango is written in Troilo's style. La Malandra is a milonga portena (milonga from Buenos Aires). Malandra (Thief, liar or bad person) is an Argentinean slang word and it's very hard to translate. One of the most popular and famous pieces written by Troilo was La trampera. It is a milonga portena and consists solely of instrumental music, just for listening and dancing. A trampera is a woman who makes traps. The title suggest that this milonga is a trampera. Bars 164, 165 and 166 are the first bars of the original La trampera. There are many different types of milongas and this one is fast, very funny and for dancing.
