Nine Carols for Guitar

selected and arranged by John Whitworth

This collection of carol arrangements is aimed at the guitarist who has moved beyond the early stages of playing and who is ready to explore keys such as D, A and E major. Much use is made of second position, with fourth and seventh positions also being encountered. The arrangements move from simple two-part settings involving open bass notes to more sophisticated harmonisations of the carol melodies. Second and third guitar parts have been provided for "Silent Night". The setting of "O come, all ye faithful" will give practice in reading and playing common two and three-part chords in first position, whilst the second arrangement of "Away in a manger" included passages in thirds and sixths moving along the fingerboard. I have added dynamics and expression markings where appropriate.

My aim throughout has been to provide rich and resonant settings of the carols, whilst avoiding undue technical difficulties - I hope you enjoy playing them!
