The Luthier Robert Welford is a native of Cambridgeshire and has been living a number of years in the city with his wife. Robert’s interest in guitars was something which started in his early years.

He went on to become a maker of Classical guitars, a complement and natural progression from his work as a design and technology teacher. He gradually gave up his earlier profession and concentrated on producing his works of art (they have to been seen and heard to appreciate the workmanship) from a workshop at the top of his home in Victoria Road Cambridge England.

Robert is also a teacher of guitar construction (via his 1971 The classical guitar, design and construction, Donald McLeod, Robert Welford and through classes he has given). 'Welford' guitars are highly praised by their owners and each one is an outstanding guitar with an individual character.

Robert initially gave each guitar a female name, e.g. Juliet. The presence of visiting students within their family prompted Robert to name some of his guitars after his guests, some with exotic names like the Persian Simine, Elaheh and Ziba.

Another of his guitars was named Diana after Princess Diana when she visited Cambridge in the early 1980’s when she was Patron of the Charity Centrepoint.

Robert continues to create his masterpieces and has recently completed a superb flamenco style guitar and remains truly dedicated to his art.
