The pieces in this collection are excerpts from Piano Sonatas by Franz Joseph Haydn (1792-1809). They are designed to acquaint the guitarist with the style of this celebrated Austrian composer.

Haydn writes in a flowing, elegant vein; his works are spontaneous and glow with natural candour, springing from a generous, honest spirit. On its six strings, the Spanish guitar embodies these qualities, so close to those of its own true nature. It is my firm conviction that many of Haydn's works can be successfully transcribed for the guitar, and that they evoke an atmosphere and style very similar to that expressed in many compositions by a great Spanish guitarist born some fifty years later: Fernando Sor.
