An Electro-Classical Guitar is where two distinct technologies converge. The traditional Classical Guitar with its nylon string sets, and more modern guitar elements such as specialist pick-ups, transducers or microphones. An Electro-Classical Guitar is the perfect guitar for anybody who wants the soft tones of nylon strings coupled with the volume offered by being able to plug into an amp or speaker system.
The first Electro Acoustic Guitar was developed in the USA back in 1966 by Charles H. Kaman. The introduction of this style of guitar soon became a resounding success and launched Kaman's company, Kaman Music Corporation to worldwide fame. Through advances in techniques and technologies the Electro Acoustic Guitar has continued to be refined since 1966, bringing a better overall sound and quality.
Unlike Electro Acoustic Guitars, Electro-Classical guitars feature transducers or microphones and do not incorporate the use of conventional pick-ups, although sometimes specially designed nylon-friendly pick-ups are used. The fact that Classical Guitars use nylon strings does limit the use of pick-ups, apart from the nylon-friendly type mentioned, as conventional pick-ups do not work effectively with strings that are made from a non-magnetic material.
Our Collection of Electro-Classical Guitars
Here at the London Guitar Studio we have an excellent collection of high quality Electro-Classical Guitars in stock, from a number of market-leading brands such as Granados and Alhambra.
The models of Electro-Classical Guitars here incorporate a number of different woods including Red Cedar, Mahogany and Indian Rosewood. Many feature a Venetian cutaway, allowing for easier access to the upper frets whilst playing.
Some models here, like the Alhambra 3C CT utilise the impressive Fishman Classic 3 system as standard. This preamp has been specifically designed by Fishman with nylon stringed instruments in mind, meaning it's the perfect partner for an Electro-Classical Guitar. The unit is small in size and profile and is packed full of essential features. The Fishman Classic 3 incorporates bass, middle, and treble controls, a phase switch, and a low battery indicator as well as the standard utilities that you may expect to find such as volume controls.
