Why should a child learn guitar on a classical model?

The classical guitar is the perfect guitar for a child to learn on, no matter what type of guitar the child will look to play in the future. One of the best reasons you'll find for choosing a classical instrument over another guitar is that is uses a full set of Nylon strings, which are far more forgiving on the fingers when compared with steel strings. Of course this is true for the fingers of children and adults alike but we know that kids' fingers are particularly soft. The benefit of Nylon strings can really be felt on those fingers that use the fret-board.

If playing the guitar is a pleasurable experience for the child then they are far more likely to persevere and continue with their school lessons and continue to progress.

Choosing the right size guitar for a child

Amongst our range of 'back-to-school' guitars we have a number of different smaller size guitars to choose from right up to full-size, all perfect for kids. Choosing the right size guitar for a child to play and learn on can be hard as children vary so much, so going by age alone is not always possible. That said, we have some general guides for age to corresponding size below, however we would always recommend if possible coming to visit us with the child for a proper fitting.

As a general rule:

  • 1/4 size: 4 - 5 years
  • 1/2 size: 5 - 6 years
  • 3/4 size: 7 - 9 years
  • 7/8 size: 9 - 11/12 years
  • Above: Full Size
