Flamenco Fans

Fans have been made for thousands of years and were originally used for keeping cool and for warding off insects. The Spanish hand fan is known as an abanico and it's much more than just a decoration. It is not only practical and beautiful but it also has symbolic value. Fans first came into Europe during the fifteenth century when Spain opened up trade routes to the Far East. These wonderful accessories soon became popular with women and soon Valencia was to become the centre of Spain's own fan production.

It is said that in the nineteenth century, women used their fans to secretly communicate with potential suitors. Women could send messages to their admirers when attending a public event such as a party or even a bullfight. For example, a closed fan held next to the heart meant "I love you" and opening the fan slowly meant "wait for me". Lending a fan to someone else was considered to bring you bad luck.

At London Guitar Studio we have a lovely collection of Flamenco hand fans which would all be fabulous finishing touches for any Flamenco outfit. Our Spanish made, traditional folding fans are essential accessories for the female Flamenco dancer. We have white, red and black fans and also red fans with pretty black lace trim. Our Flamenco fans are beautifully crafted and would certainly add a little flair and panache to your look.
