Gypsy Jazz Origins
The creation of the Gypsy Jazz, or Manouche Jazz, style is credited to Jean "Django" Reinhardt, a famous Belgian guitarist and composer. During the 1930s Reinhardt along with Jazz violinist Stéphane Grappelli founded the influential Jazz group 'Quintette du Hot Club de France' which also included a number of other members including Jazz double-bassist Louis Vola.
Django Reinhardt favoured the Selmer guitar, a style that today is almost entirely associated with Gypsy Jazz guitar. Selmer Maccaferri style guitars have a great tone and are loud, allowing the lead to be easily heard within the group. The lead, and the guitar favoured by Django himself featured an Oval hole, known as a "petite bouche". Supporting rhythm guitarists would typically use a D-hole Selmer guitar however this was by far not a strict rule, with the two styles being used interchangeably, even by Django Reinhardt himself.
