History of Teodoro Pérez Guitars
Teodoro Perez has become known as one of the great Spanish luthiers, keeping alive traditional and artisan guitar making. From a young age Teodoro learnt and mastered his craft under José Ramirez III as an apprentice. During his early career, Pérez made lutes, bandurias and mandolins, learning techniques that would later become critical to him when he progressed further under José Ramirez III and began making Classical and Flamenco guitars. The techniques that Teodoro Pérez learnt and keeps alive in the construction of his guitars to this day are in keeping with the traditional techniques of the Madrid school.
After many years working alongside José Ramirez III, in 1991 Teodoro Pérez began his own company, and it's from this point that we really began to see Teodoro Pérez guitars gain a name for themselves the world over, perhaps especially so in countries such as the UK, USA and Japan where there is a strong appreciation for Classical and Flamenco guitars.
Construction of Teodoro Pérez Guitars
As you may expect, Teodoro Pérez utilises only the very best materials for use in his guitars. Amongst these you will find a great selection of different woods, each of which is used expertly for its different properties. The woods are carefully selected and prepared, often undergoing extensive periods of drying, sometimes for decades before being used. This ensures the stability of the materials into the future. It's for this same reason that Teodoro Pérez makes specific recommendations for the storage of his guitars, with focus in particular on ambient humidity.
Once constructed and finished, Teodoro Pérez guitars are treated. The guitars come complete with an exquisite varnish, usually a French polish, which gives a Pérez guitar a beautiful finish without negatively impacting on the sonority of the instrument; in fact it has a positive impact on sound projection.
Today Teodoro Pérez's workshop really is a family business, as he works closely with his son Sergio, who is also a luthier and his daughter Beatriz. Each handmade Teodoro Pérez guitar is constructed and finished in a period of 3-4 months.
