History of the Ukulele

The Ukulele is a wonderful instrument which is a member of the lute family. The Ukulele originated in Hawaii during the 19th century as was an adaptation of the Portuguese machete which arrived on the islands via Portuguese immigrants from Madeira and Cape Verde. The unusual sounding name translates as "jumping flea" and might have referred to the finger work of the musicians. King Kalākaua of Hawaii was a great fan of the instrument and included it in the performances provided at royal events. By the early 20th century the Ukulele had become popular across the United States and subsequently throughout the world.

In the UK it was George Formby who proved to be the most famous Ukulele player although it should be noted that he often played a banjolele which is a hybrid instrument with a Ukulele neck and a banjo body. Because of George Formby and the portability of the Ukulele, the popularity of the instrument surged dramatically and continues to grow.

Types of Ukulele

The tone of the Ukulele varies according to the size and construction of the particular instrument. There are four principle sizes of ukulele and these are soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. Traditionally Ukuleles are made of wood with more expensive models being fashioned from solid hardwoods like mahogany. The preferred wood is Koa. The instruments are usually shaped like small acoustic guitars but are sometimes non-standard shapes. They usually have four strings but you will see taropatch ukuleles which have six or eight strings.
