The Flamenco Guitar

From the heart of Andalusia, in southern Spain, Flamenco has spread the world over to be a distinctive style of music and dance associated with deep rooted Spanish and Romani traditions. The performance is characterised by iconic dancing and the high-tempo Toque. Toque being the guitar element of the Flamenco. Other elements that fit together to produce the finished art form also includes the Baile, or the actual dance, the Cante, the singing, and the Palmas, the memorable hand claps. See more.

For the purpose of the traditional Toque the Flamenco Guitar came into being. The Flamenco Guitar shares a number of different elements with the traditional Classical Guitar. The Flamenco Guitar does differ in some ways however. Flamenco Guitars are built to be a little lighter than a Classical; this has a distinct and desired effect on the sound produced by the guitar.

Another reason for the lighter weight is that Flamenco Guitars are true performance guitars, it's always essential that they are heard above the accompanying noises of other aspects of the dance, such as the footwork and hand claps. An extra boost of sound is achieved by using harder woods for the back and surrounds and thinner, softer woods for the top of the guitar. This construction technique, as well as the cutting down of internal structures, leads to the lighter weight of the Flamenco Guitar.

The art of playing a Flamenco Guitar, in a Flamenco style, is quite different to the playing of an Acoustic or Classical Guitar. Traditionally there are certain techniques that are employed by a Flamenco guitarist. These include finger taps, also known as Golpe, and Rasgueado, a strum of the strings using the outer side of the fingers, amongst others.
